This set contains two seedlings of Castanea sativa, better known as the sweet chestnut. This impressive tree species is renowned for its edible chestnuts, beautiful autumn colours and distinctive appearance. Sweet chestnuts can live to a very old age and, over time, develop an imposing trunk and broad crown.

The tree combines ornamental value with an edible harvest, making it a popular choice for large gardens, food forests and landscape planting schemes.

Why choose Castanea sativa?

• Edible chestnuts
• Beautiful golden-yellow autumn colour
• An impressive tree for the long term
• A valuable tree for food forests
• A robust and hardy variety
• A distinctive character in later life

Contents of this set

• 2 x Castanea sativa – sweet chestnut
- Pot size: 9 cm
• Height on delivery: approx. 60 cm (approximate)
• Total number of plants: 2

The plants are supplied in a 9 cm nursery pot. These are young seedlings that will continue to grow after planting. The height on delivery is therefore approximate and may vary depending on the season and stage of growth.

About Castanea sativa

Castanea sativa grows into a large deciduous tree that can eventually reach a height of 20 to 30 metres. The tree forms a broad crown and, as it ages, develops a characteristic deeply furrowed trunk.

The leaves are oblong, glossy green and have a strikingly serrated edge. In autumn, the leaves turn warm shades of golden yellow. In June and July, long creamy-white catkins appear, attracting many insects. After flowering, the familiar spiny husks form, within which the edible chestnuts develop. The nuts ripen in autumn and have been valued as a food source for centuries.

Care

The sweet chestnut grows best in a sunny to lightly shaded position. The tree prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil. It does not tolerate wet or heavy clay soils as well. Standing water around the roots should be avoided in particular. After planting, regular watering is important until the trees are well established. Older trees develop a deep root system and are then better able to withstand dry spells.

Prune

Pruning is usually not necessary. If required, damaged or unwanted branches can be removed during the winter. Due to its natural growth habit, the tree looks its best when given sufficient space to develop freely.

Winter care

Castanea sativa is highly hardy and well-suited to the British climate. Young trees may benefit from some protection during very harsh winters, but mature specimens generally tolerate low temperatures without any problems. The tree loses its leaves in winter and comes into leaf again in spring.

Uses of chestnuts

Sweet chestnuts are edible and can be roasted, boiled or used in a variety of dishes. The nuts are high in starch and have been used in various European cuisines for centuries. In addition to its edible harvest, the tree also provides valuable timber that is renowned for its durability.

For lovers of nut and fruit trees

The sweet chestnut is an excellent choice for food forests, large gardens and landscape planting schemes. The tree combines well with walnut, hazel, horse chestnut and other food-producing tree species.
