About Acca sellowiana (pineapple guava)

In summer, Acca sellowiana blooms with striking flowers with white-pink petals and striking red-coloured stamens. These blooms are followed by oval, greenish fruits with a fresh, sweet-sour flavour often described as a combination of pineapple, guava and strawberry. The fruits are edible and usually ripen on the plant after overwintering.

Growth is calm and compact. In ideal conditions it can grow into a larger bush, but pruning makes it manageable and suitable for smaller gardens or pots. Acca sellowiana is hermaphroditic and can also form fruit as a solitary, although cross-pollination with several plants improves yield and flavour.

Location and care

Brazilian pineapple guava grows best in a sunny to slightly shaded spot in well-drained, humus-rich soil. It is less tolerant of wet winters.
