This set of three Camellia japonica-varieties brings colour, elegance and structure to the garden, even when many other plants are still dormant. Each variety has its own unique flower shape and colour, but they share some strong characteristics: dark green, glossy leaves that stay put even in winter, a compact growth habit and rich flowering in early spring. Ideal for borders, shady spots or in ornamental pots on terrace or balcony.
1. Camellia japonica ‘Kramer's Supreme’
Flower colour: Deep red
Bloom: February - March
Flower shape: Large, double-filled, peony-shaped (up to 12 cm diameter)
Particulars: Lightly scented flowers
Growth mode: Upright and bushy
‘Kramer's Supreme’ is one of the best-loved camellias for its large, intensely red flowers with a peony-like texture. The sturdy, leathery leaves provide a manicured look all year round.
2. Camellia japonica ‘Lady Campbell’
Flower colour: Pink to crimson
Bloom: March - May
Flower shape: Full-bodied, compact
Particulars: Very floriferous and compact growing
Growth mode: Compact, upright (up to 2 m)
‘Lady Campbell’ is known for its long flowering period and abundance of flowers. It is perfect for smaller gardens or as an accent shrub thanks to its compact shape.
3. Camellia japonica ‘Bonomiana’
Flower colour: White-pink with crimson stripes
Bloom: February - April
Flower shape: Large, stuffed (7-10 cm diameter)
ParticularsUnique striped petals
Growth mode: Compact and graceful
‘Bonomiana’ is a special eye-catcher thanks to its marbled flowers. The combination of white, pink and red gives this camellia a striking, playful character.
Care & Pitch
All three camellias prefer a spot in the semi- to full shade with well-drained, slightly acid soil. A sheltered location prevents frost damage to the flower buds. Make sure the roots are not wet for long periods, especially in winter.
Hardiness: Reasonably to well hardy (up to approx. -12 °C in a sheltered location)
Pruning: If necessary after flowering, to maintain shape
Maintenance: Low requirements, regular fertilisation in spring promotes flowering and leaf quality
