The Lycium chinense, better known as the Chinese goji berry or buckthorn, is a superfood, and ornamental shrub known for its rich crop of bright red, elongated berries. This particular plant is native to China and has been growing there as a fruit and medicinal plant for thousands of years. The orange-red berries, 1.5 to 2 cm in size, have a sweet flavour with notes of cherry and cranberry and are rich in vitamins A, C and E, minerals and antioxidants - a true superfood straight from your own garden.

The Lycium chinense is a deciduous, well-branched shrub that grows about 1.5 to 2 metres tall. In summer (June to August) it blooms with charming, purple-violet flowers that attract many bees. In late summer and early autumn (August to October), the striking, bright red berries appear. These can be eaten fresh, but are also excellent for making tea, juice, jam or for drying.

The goji berry is hardy, hardy to -15°C and grows best in a sunny spot in well-drained, nutritious soil. It tolerates dry conditions well once it has taken root. Thanks to its high ornamental value and edible yield, the box elderberry fits perfectly in the edible garden, food forest or as a solitary shrub in the ornamental garden.
