About these dwarf plums
These three plum trees have been selected for their compact growth habit. They remain considerably smaller than traditional plum trees and generally reach a height of around 2 to 3 metres. In spring, delicate white blossoms appear, attracting many pollinating insects. The plums then develop, turning yellow, red or deep blue-purple depending on the variety.
The fruits are juicy, sweet and ideal for eating fresh.
Care
These plums grow best in a sunny spot. The more sunlight the trees receive, the better the fruit development and flavour will generally be. The trees thrive in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. They also grow very well in spacious pots or planters. Regular watering is important during the first year after planting and when grown in pots. The trees can require a relatively large amount of water, particularly on hot summer days.
Prune
Due to their compact growth habit, pruning is usually only required to a limited extent. If desired, the trees can be lightly pruned back after flowering or after the harvest to maintain their shape. Heavy pruning is generally not necessary.
Winter care
The trees are very hardy and well suited to the Dutch climate. They lose their leaves in winter and sprout new ones in spring. During prolonged periods of frost, potted trees may benefit from some extra protection.
Pollination
The three varieties are not fully self-pollinating. That is precisely why this combination is an excellent choice. As several varieties of plum are planted together, pollination is often more successful and the chances of a bountiful harvest increase considerably.
Combining three different varieties not only adds colour and variety, but often leads to a higher yield as well.
For fruit lovers with limited space
This set is ideal for terraces, patios, smaller gardens and lovers of unusual fruit. The combination of yellow, red and blue plums makes for a decorative and tasty addition to any fruit collection.
