Add a tasty and exotic twist to your garden with this diverse collection of three kiwi plants:
Actinidia deliciosa Hayward (female) - This female kiwi plant, known as Actinidia deliciosa 'Hayward', needs a male counterpart, such as Actinidia deliciosa 'Atlas', to bear fruit. Plant it in a sheltered spot to prevent the flowers from freezing in spring. After 2 to 3 years, the Hayward kiwi will start bearing fruit. It thrives best in a sunny spot with enough space for a bountiful harvest later in life. This kiwi plant can tolerate frost down to -20 degrees Celsius, making it well suited to our climate. For young plants, some protection is recommended in moderate to severe frosts.
Actinidia deliciosa 'Solo' (female/self-pollinating)- This cultivar is known for its small edible fruits with juicy green flesh. But the Chinese gooseberry, or yellow kiwi, is also appreciated for its large, heart-shaped leaves and young, reddish-hairy stems. It is a fast-growing climbing plant that thrives in both full sun and semi-shade. As a young plant, it needs some protection from frost.
Actinidia deliciosa 'Atlas' (male) - Although this kiwi variety does not bear fruit itself, it provides valuable pollen for pollinating female kiwi varieties such as Actinidia deliciosa 'Hayward'. In doing so, the Atlas contributes to a richer harvest. During the flowering period in May-June, Actinidia deliciosa 'Atlas' shows off its white blossoms.
The kiwi plant thrives best against a sheltered, sunny wall or fence, in fertile, well-drained soil. It can also be placed in a pot on a balcony or terrace. Give the Kiwi a place where it can climb using a rack, mesh or stretched wires. Regular pruning keeps the plant beautiful and promotes flower setting.
