About the species

Pinus nigra nigra belongs to the pine family (Pinaceae) and is an evergreen conifer that occurs naturally in parts of southern and central Europe. The tree has sturdy branches with clusters of two dark green needles.

The bark is a distinctive feature of this species. When young, it is relatively smooth, but as the tree ages, it develops a deeply furrowed, dark grey to blackish bark.

The tree produces light brown cones which appear on the branches once they have ripened. In spring, empty cones may fall off. Thanks to its dense growth, this pine provides shelter and can attract birds.

Care

Heavy pruning of old wood is less well tolerated and is therefore not recommended.

The Austrian pine is very hardy and retains its needles in winter. As a result, the plant remains green all year round and adds texture to the garden even in winter.
