Bring a romantic, classic look to your garden with the Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’, better known as the Gelderland rose or snowball bush. This deciduous shrub is loved for its profuse flowering in May and June, with large spherical flower clusters that start as pale green and slowly change to bright white. Although the flowers resemble snowballs, this variety does not produce berries, distinguishing it from the species.
The Roseum grows into a sturdy shrub 2 to 3 metres tall and is ideal as a solitary in a larger border or as part of a mixed hedge. The branches can sometimes overhang gracefully due to the weight of the flowers - perfect for use as cut flowers for the vase.
Plus points:
Large, globular flowers (snowballs) in May-June
No berries, so less attractive to birds (and neater garden)
Strong, low-maintenance shrub - pruning not necessary
Well-hardy and suitable for moist to normal garden soil
Suitable for solitary, hedges or bank planting
Care:
Plant the Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’ in full sun or light shade. It likes a nutritious, well-drained but slightly moist soil. Pruning is not necessary, but spent flowers may be cut as cut flowers. Suitable for both formal gardens and natural borders.
