Chaenomeles superba ‘Salmon Horizon’ is a low-growing, richly flowering ornamental shrub that immediately stands out with its warm salmon-pink to orange-pink flowers with striking golden-yellow stamens. This Japanese ornamental cherry blooms profusely in early spring and brings early colour to the garden, even before many other plants are in flower.
This variety grows as a compact, wide-spreading shrub about 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide. Its dense growth and glossy dark green leaves make it ideal for use in borders, bedding or as a low hedge. This ornamental cherry also comes into its own in Japanese gardens. Its light spines also make it suitable as a natural partition.
After flowering, small, green-yellow fruits reminiscent of mini-apples develop in autumn. These quinces are aromatic and, once processed, can be used for jams or jellies, for example. They are also decorative in flower arrangements.
‘Salmon Horizon’ has few requirements and grows well in almost any well-drained soil. It prefers a sunny to semi-shaded position and can also be led against a wall or fence. For a strong start and healthy growth, use a good quality planting soil when planting and fertilise annually with Organic fertiliser.
