The Sorbus ‘Burka’, also known as big-fruited rowan berry, is an unusual cross between the chokeberry (Aronia) and the common rowan (Sorbus aucuparia). This unique hybrid combines the best of both species: a graceful growth habit, abundant flowering and large, nutritious berries full of antioxidants. In spring, it blooms profusely with white umbels full of fragrant flowers, which are crowded by bees and other pollinators.
From August, the large, dark red to almost black berries ripen - sometimes as big as a coin. They are edible fresh, but look best in jam, juice, wine or liqueur. ‘Burka’ is also an asset as an ornamental plant: its deep glossy green leaves turn a beautiful orange-red in autumn, making the shrub or small tree a real eye-catcher in the garden or food forest.
The Sorbus ‘Burka’ grows vigorously and is extremely hardy. It feels at home in almost any well-drained, fertile soil and tolerates both full sun and light shade. Thanks to its self-pollinating nature, it gives a rich harvest even as a solitary plant.
