The Diospyros lotus, also known as the lotus tree or god pear, is a special relative of the persimmon and an excellent choice for those looking for something special in the garden. This deciduous, hardy tree bears small, edible fruits with a unique flavour - sweet to slightly sour - and a striking appearance.

From the third year of growth, persimmons, small round fruits 3 to 5 cm in size, form in late summer. They turn from yellow to deep orange and ripen to blue-black in October or November. The fruits are delicious eaten fresh or processed in jam, chutney or as a dried snack.

The Diospyros lotus can grow into a medium-sized tree of about 6 to 15 metres with a broad, round crown without pruning. This species also grows well as an espalier against a wall. The shiny, dark green leaves remain on the tree for a long time and turn a beautiful yellow in autumn. The tree is practically insensitive to diseases and pests and flowers in June with inconspicuous, but bee-friendly flowers.

Plant the lotus tree in a sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered spot in well-drained, nutritious soil. Young plants can be a bit frost-prone the first winter, so some protection is recommended.
