The Morus alba x rubra ‘Gerardi Dwarf’ is a compact, low-growing mulberry that is particularly suitable for small gardens, borders and even pots on balconies or terraces. A cross between the white and red mulberry, this dwarf mulberry is known for its abundant harvest of large, purplish-red berries with a sweet, slightly winey flavour. The fruits can grow up to 4 cm long and are ideal for eating fresh, or for use in jams, cakes and juices.
The shrub has dense branching with short internodes (distance between nodes), giving it a full and robust appearance, yet keeping it compact. With a maximum height of about 1.5 metres, Gerardi Dwarf remains well manageable. This variety bears fruit at an early age, making it an excellent choice for those who want to harvest quickly.
Plant Gerardi Dwarf in a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained soil. Especially in spring, watch out for night frost: young plants can be damaged by this and should be temporarily covered. This dwarf mulberry is hardy to about -15°C and requires little maintenance.
Plus points:
Compact dwarf form, ideal for small gardens and pots
Large, juicy fruit with a rich, sweet flavour
Carries from an early age
Decorative and fertile
Low maintenance
