About the Elstar apple tree
The Elstar is one of the best-known apple varieties in the Netherlands and is prized for its aromatic sweet-and-sour flavour. The apples have firm flesh and are suitable for eating fresh, as well as for juicing or desserts.
The tree blooms in spring with white-pink blossoms and produces medium-sized reddish-yellow apples in autumn.
About the Conference pear tree
The Conference pear is a very popular variety known for its elongated fruit and juicy flavour. The pears are tender, sweet and perfect for eating fresh.
The tree flowers profusely in spring and, under favourable conditions, produces a reliable harvest in autumn.
Care
Fruit trees grow best in a sunny spot. Plenty of sunlight encourages flowering and the ripening of the fruit.
The trees prefer nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. When planting, compost or organic fertiliser can be added to improve the soil structure.
During dry spells, it is advisable to water the plants more frequently, especially young trees.
Prune
Apple and pear trees are best pruned during the winter months. This involves removing crossing, steep or weak branches to maintain an open crown structure.
Proper pruning improves fruit quality and keeps the trees healthy.
Winter care
Both fruit trees are hardy and well suited to the Dutch climate. In winter, the trees shed their leaves and go into dormancy. Extra protection is usually not required.
Use of the fruits
Elstar apples are ideal for eating fresh, but are also perfect for desserts and juice. Conference pears are popular as eating pears and can also be used in cakes or fruit salads.
Combining both varieties results in a varied harvest from your own garden.
For fruit tree enthusiasts
This combination of apple and pear makes an excellent foundation for an edible garden. The trees pair well with other fruit trees, soft fruit bushes or nut trees, ensuring a varied harvest throughout the season.
