About the Ficus carica ‘Longue d’Août’

‘Longue d’Août’ grows into a medium-sized fig bush or small tree, reaching a height of around 2 to 3 metres. The plant has large, decorative leaves that lend the garden a Mediterranean feel.

The fruits are strikingly elongated and turn greenish-yellow as they ripen. The flesh is soft red, juicy and very sweet in flavour.

This variety is known for its relatively early harvest period. Under favourable conditions, the first figs can ripen from August onwards.

Care

Figs grow best in a warm, sunny and sheltered spot. A spot against a south-facing wall or on a warm terrace helps the fruit to ripen properly.

The plant prefers well-drained soil. In pots, good drainage is important to prevent the roots from becoming waterlogged in winter.

Compost or organic fertiliser can be added when planting. Fertiliser can be applied annually in the spring to encourage growth and fruit production.

Prune

Ficus carica responds well to pruning and can be kept compact. Pruning is best carried out in early spring or immediately after harvesting.

Shoots that are too long can be pruned back to maintain a compact, well-branched plant.

Winter care

‘Longue d’Août’ is fairly hardy and can withstand temperatures down to around –12 to –15 °C. Young plants may benefit from extra protection during harsh winters, particularly if they are potted.

In a sheltered spot in the garden, this fig tree usually overwinters well.
