Why choose this spindle tree?
Contents of this product
Plants are natural products. Height, branching and the number of leaves may vary from plant to plant and from season to season. We cannot guarantee that the plant will be in flower or bearing fruit upon delivery.
Growth and flowering
In the garden, the shrub reaches a height of around 80 to 100 cm, depending on the conditions and pruning. The pink flowers appear in summer and provide a lovely contrast to the foliage. In autumn, the foliage may take on yellowish to reddish-purple hues before falling off. The plant sprouts again in spring.
Location and planting
Choose a sunny spot or light partial shade. Flowering is usually most profuse in sufficient sunlight. Normal, nutrient-rich garden soil is suitable, provided it is well-drained. The soil should be able to retain moisture, but ensure the roots are not left standing in water for long periods. Dig a generous planting hole, plant at the same depth as in the nursery pot and water generously.
Water and nutrition
After planting, keep the root ball sufficiently moist until the shrub is well established. Water more frequently during prolonged periods of hot, dry weather. A layer of compost or mulch in the spring helps to improve the soil and retain moisture. Keep the base of the shrub clear. A potted plant dries out more quickly and requires more frequent checking.
Pruning and winter care
In early spring, remove damaged or old branches to make way for new growth. After flowering, you can cut back the spent flower heads and lightly prune the shrub to maintain a neat shape. Heavy pruning is not necessary every year. The plant is hardy; if grown in a pot, protect the root ball from prolonged severe frost.
Combining plants in the garden
Plant this spindle tree along a path, at the front of a shrub border or in groups to create a tranquil, flowering display. Combine it with ornamental grasses and perennials that thrive in full sun to light partial shade. Planted in a spacious pot with good drainage, it is also suitable for a patio.
