Ugni molinae ‘Pretty Berry’, better known as Chilean guava, is a compact evergreen shrub with small glossy leaves, white flowers and aromatic red berries. Thanks to its modest size, this unusual fruit plant is ideal for a small garden, an edible border or a large pot on the patio.

Small white flowers appear in late spring. Later, wine-red to red berries develop, with a sweet, aromatic and fruity flavour that is often described as strawberry-like. The berries can be eaten fresh, but are also suitable for processing.

Why choose Ugni ‘Pretty Berry’?

• Edible, aromatic red berries
• Compact growth to approximately 75–100 cm
• Evergreen and therefore decorative almost all year round
• White blossoms in late spring
• Suitable for both garden and container cultivation
• A rare variety of fruit from South America
• A great choice for lovers of unusual soft fruits

Contents of this product

• 1 x Ugni molinae ‘Pretty Berry’ – Chilean guava
- Pot size: 2 litres
• Height on delivery: approx. 25 cm (approximate)

The plant is supplied in a nursery pot and will continue to grow after planting. Its height, branching, foliage and any flowers or fruit may vary depending on the season.

Flowering and edible fruit

In May and June, the Chilean guava may flower, producing small white blossoms. These stand out beautifully against the delicate dark-green foliage.

Following successful flowering, small berries develop which turn red to wine-red as they ripen. The fruit is usually ripe in August and September.

The flavour is sweet and strongly aromatic, with fruity notes that are often compared to strawberries. The berries can be eaten straight from the bush, but are also lovely used in, for example, jam, desserts or other sweet dishes.

Compact and evergreen growth

‘Pretty Berry’ grows into a compact, densely branched shrub approximately 75 to 100 cm high and about the same width. This makes the plant suitable for areas where there is little space available for larger fruit bushes.

The small oval leaves normally remain on the plant throughout the winter. Ugni thus combines the characteristics of a fruiting shrub with those of a compact, evergreen ornamental shrub.

Location and care

The Chilean guava thrives in a sunny, warm spot. A sheltered spot also helps to protect the plant during cold winters.

Ugni grows in various types of soil, provided that excess water can drain away properly. Water regularly after planting. Once it is well-established, the plant can tolerate temporary drought reasonably well.

When growing plants in pots, they need to be watered more frequently, especially on hot summer days. Use a pot with plenty of drainage holes so that the roots do not remain wet for long periods.

Prune

Due to its compact, natural growth habit, little pruning is required. If desired, shoots that are too long or unwanted can be cut back to keep the shrub nice and compact and well-branched.

In addition, remove any damaged or dead twigs as and when necessary.

Winter care

Ugni molinae ‘Pretty Berry’ is moderately hardy. In a sheltered spot, the plant can tolerate light to moderate frost, but extra protection is advisable in the event of severe or prolonged frost.

Potted plants, in particular, are more susceptible because the root ball can freeze more quickly. During cold spells, a pot can be placed in a sheltered spot or wrapped up for extra protection. In colder conditions, the foliage may temporarily discolour or become damaged.

Speciality soft fruit for the garden and patio

‘Pretty Berry’ is a lovely choice for anyone who, as well as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, wants to grow some lesser-known varieties of fruit. The combination of compact growth, evergreen foliage, white flowers and aromatic red fruit makes the Chilean guava both ornamental and edible.
