Looking for a Mediterranean eye-catcher that’s both decorative and useful in the kitchen? Citrus aurantium, better known as bitter orange or bitter orange tree, combines fragrant blossoms, attractive fruit and a rich history as an ingredient in marmalade and liqueur. Ideal for the patio, balcony or a conservatory.
Why choose Citrus aurantium?
✔ Strongly scented white blossoms in spring – irresistible to bees
✔ Bitter-aromatic orange fruits – perfect for jam, marmalade or orange bitters
✔ Compact, attractive citrus tree – suitable for growing in pots
✔ Promotes fat burning thanks to the natural extract synephrine
✔ Available in a sturdy 2-litre pot – ready to plant out or pot up straight away
The fruits are slightly oval and have a diameter of about 8 cm. The peel is rich in essential oils and an intense orange-red colour. From spring until well into summer, this citrus tree bears fragrant blossom and, later, fruit – a delight for both the eye and the nose.
Pitch & care
Citrus aurantium prefers a warm, sunny spot, sheltered from the wind. In spring, as soon as the risk of frost has passed, the plant can be moved outdoors. Water it regularly, but avoid waterlogged soil. From April to the end of September, add a special citrus fertiliser, such as Citrus Focus, to the watering water every three weeks. In autumn, the tree can be pruned back to keep it compact.
Important: Overwintering
This citrus fruit is not hardy and is classified as zone 11 (minimum +2°C). From autumn onwards, place the plant in a bright, frost-free spot – preferably between +2 and +12°C. During this dormant period, a little water once a month is sufficient. Do not fertilise unless the temperature remains consistently above 12°C; in that case, half a dose of citrus fertiliser per month is sufficient. If the temperature falls below +2°C, the plant will suffer serious damage.
