Corylus avellana ‘Webb's Prize Cob’ is a classic, richly productive hazelnut tree that has been loved for generations for its large, sweet hazelnuts and reliable growth. This hardy shrub flowers early in the year: yellow-brown male catkins and small, reddish female flowers appear as early as February-March. This makes this variety an important early food source for insects as well as an excellent choice for anyone who would like a low-maintenance, productive hazel in the garden.
‘Webb's Prize Cob’ produces a high yield of hefty, flavourful nuts that ripen in September-October. The shrub remains self-pollinating, of course, but as with all hazels, the yield increases significantly when combined with other varieties such as Corylus avellana ‘Jefferson’ from our hazelnut range. This makes it ideal in a mixed nut garden or food forest.
This hazel grows to around 3-5 metres without pruning, but is excellent for keeping compact. In winter, you can easily rejuvenate it by cutting away old branches and keeping the shrub airy. It has few soil requirements and does well in sun to partial shade, as long as the soil is moist and permeable.
Want extra support for growth and nut production? Then fertilise in spring with our Organic fertiliser. And for a complete nut garden, combine this hazel beautifully with other varieties or with vigorous nut trees such as our Juglans regia ‘Chandler’.
