The Diospyros khaki ‘Coroa de Rei’ is a rare Portuguese variety that has been appreciated in the traditional orchards of the south for generations for its exceptional flavour. The fruit is known as truly sweet gelatine bombs: when fully ripe, the flesh turns into a soft, almost jelly-like dessert that is among the absolute delicacies among persimmons.
This particular cultivar forms a compact, elegant tree about 3-4 metres tall and thrives in the Netherlands and Belgium when in a sunny, sheltered spot. Soft, yellowish-white flowers appear in April-May, followed by beautifully deep orange fruits in autumn. They often become even sweeter after the first night frost. The leaves turn a brilliant yellow to red in autumn, giving this tree strong ornamental value even without fruits.
‘Coroa de Rei’ is self-pollinating, but for a higher and more stable yield it can be combined with another persimmon tree such as Diospyros khaki ‘Fau Fau’. It likes full sun and likes normal, slightly calcareous garden soil. Protect young trees in severe frost with fleece. If necessary, prune in February or March to maintain an open and compact crown.
For a strong start, you can plant with Planting soil for fruit trees. Combine this unique Portuguese variety for a rich, varied harvest with other varieties such as ‘Rojo Brilliante’, ‘Jiro’ Whether the precocious ‘Tone Wase’.
