The Diospyros khaki ‘Jiro’ is a classic Japanese kakiras loved since the 19th century for its reliable yield, beautiful orange fruits and excellent, sweet taste. This breed is a non-astringent khaki, meaning the fruit can already be eaten hard and crisp - just like an apple - but is also delicious when soft and fully ripe. This makes ‘Jiro’ a versatile and accessible choice for both novice and experienced fruit lovers.
The tree grows quietly and forms a compact, slightly upright crown about 3-5 metres tall. Small, creamy-yellow flowers appear in May. The fruits are medium to large (up to about 250 g), round to slightly flattened and deep orange in colour. They ripen in the late autumn, often while the leaves have already fallen, giving this tree a striking, graceful appearance.
‘Jiro’ is self-pollinating, but for an even richer and more stable fruit set, it can be combined with a pollinator such as the Diospyros kaki ‘Pollinator’. The tree likes a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Additional protection is recommended during severe frosts.
For extra variety in your garden, combine the ‘Jiro’ with other fruit and nut varieties such as the Pistachio tree (Pistachia vera) or the precocious Discovery apple tree (Malus domestica ‘Discovery’)
