Ficus tikoua (also called Di-guo in China) is a rare, ground-covering fig species distinguished by its creeping growth habit and ability to form a dense, low cover. It grows with shoots and spreads horizontally over the soil, forming a closed carpet of leaves. This makes this fig especially suitable as a ground cover in sheltered areas.

Native to parts of China, Laos, Tibet and Vietnam, this species is still in limited supply. Ficus tikoua is therefore available in moderation and of particular interest to lovers of unusual and less common plants.

About Ficus tikoua (groundcover fig)

Ficus tikoua's foliage remains evergreen under mild conditions and retains its ornamental value during mild winters. The plant feels most at home in sheltered gardens, where it is protected from cold winds and severe frosts. A sunny position or light shade is well tolerated.

Ficus tikoua forms small figs that are edible, but mainly have a decorative value. The fruits are modest in size and contribute to the special character of this plant, without the cultivation being primarily aimed at harvesting.

Growth remains low; the plant invests mainly in spreading rather than height. This makes it suitable for use at the edge of borders, on embankments or in warm, sheltered places where an evergreen ground cover is desired.
