The Juglans regia ‘Franquette’ is a classic French walnut variety that has been prized for generations for its excellent nut quality and reliable yield. This robust, late-flowering walnut tree is particularly well-suited to the European climate, as its late flowering significantly reduces the risk of frost damage to the flowers. The ‘Franquette’ grows vigorously and forms an upright crown with graceful, dark-green foliage and beautifully furrowed bark as the tree matures.
The nuts are medium to large in size, firm in texture and have a rough, slightly grooved shell. The flavour is full-bodied, creamy and mild — ideal for eating fresh or for long-term storage. Harvesting takes place from late September to early October, just before the cold and wet autumn sets in. The ‘Franquette’ bears fruit from a young age and is hardy to well below -20°C.
Although the tree can grow on its own, cross-pollination is desirable for a bountiful harvest. It is therefore best to plant it alongside other varieties such as Juglans regia ‘Fernor’ or Juglans regia ‘Chandler’ for optimal fruit set. For nut tree enthusiasts, this variety pairs perfectly with our Pistachio trees set (Pistacia vera) for a unique, Mediterranean look in the garden.
