About the Juglans regia

Juglans regia grows into a large deciduous tree, reaching a height of around 20 to 30 metres. The tree forms a broad, open crown and can live for hundreds of years.
The leaf is composed of several leaflets and has a distinctive aromatic scent when touched or crushed. In summer, the large foliage provides a pleasant spot of shade.
In spring, the inflorescences appear, after which the familiar walnuts develop. The fruits are enclosed in a green husk that splits open in autumn when the nuts are ripe.
The nuts have a rich, slightly sweet flavour and are rich in healthy fats, protein and fibre.

Care

The walnut tree grows best in a sunny spot with plenty of space to spread out.
A nutritious, well-drained soil produces the best results. The tree does not like soil that remains wet for long periods, but does appreciate soil that retains sufficient moisture during dry spells.
Young trees need to be watered regularly in their first few years until they are well established.

Prune

Walnut trees should ideally be pruned as little as possible. If pruning is necessary, it is usually carried out during the summer.
Pruning during the winter or early spring is generally avoided due to the tree’s vigorous sap flow.

Winter care

Juglans regia is very hardy and well suited to the British climate. Young trees may be susceptible to late spring frosts during flowering, but the tree itself tolerates winter temperatures very well.

In winter, the tree sheds its leaves and sprouts new ones in spring.

A distinctive feature of the walnut tree

Walnut trees naturally produce a substance called juglone. This substance is released through the roots and fallen leaves and can inhibit the growth of certain plant species in the immediate vicinity of the tree. Bear this in mind when choosing plants to grow beneath the canopy of older trees.

How to use the notes

Walnuts can be eaten fresh or used in cakes, salads, desserts and other dishes. Thanks to their high nutritional value, walnuts are among the most popular edible nuts in the world.

For lovers of nut and fruit trees

Juglans regia is a valuable addition to food forests, orchards and large gardens. The tree combines well with other nut trees such as hazel, hickory and white hickory to create a varied and productive planting scheme.
