The female Pistacia vera ‘Kerman’ is one of the most highly regarded pistachio varieties in the world – and with good reason. This elegant tree produces large, flavourful pistachios of the highest quality, provided there is a male pollinator nearby. Together with the male Pistacia vera ‘Peter’ a perfect pair: the male tree produces the pollen, whilst ‘Kerman’ produces the nuts that ripen in the autumn.

‘Kerman’ is known for its graceful, slender growth habit, fresh green, oval-shaped leaves and high productivity once the tree reaches maturity. Although pistachio trees take several years to bear fruit, the harvest is subsequently abundant and exceptionally flavourful – the sort of quality you would normally only find in traditional growing regions.

This female pistachio tree thrives in full sun, warm conditions and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, but grows best with regular watering during its active growing season. Avoid wet, heavy soil: pistachios cannot tolerate prolonged moisture around the roots. The tree is reasonably hardy (zones 7–11) and survives light frosts down to around –12 °C.
