Prunus dulcis 'Ferragnes', also known as the Ferragnès almond tree, is an excellent choice for colder regions, where this French variety has produced excellent nuts in recent years. This almond tree is very productive, producing plump, sweet almonds with a soft exterior.
Flowering starts early, from March, with beautiful pink blossoms. However, it is important to note that frost can damage the bloom. In the autumn, small, apricot-like fruits appear, containing edible almond kernels.
Prunus dulcis ‘Ferragnès’ is not self-pollinating, but acts as an excellent pollinator for other almond trees, a good pollinator for ‘Ferragnès’ is, for example, ‘Texas‘ or ‘Ferraduel’. This tree has medium vigour and an upright growth habit. The soft pink spring blossoms are beautiful to see and appear in April.
The fruits have green, hairy husks and must be dried a few weeks after picking. They have a clear sweet taste, with a slight hint of cocoa and pepper. They also have a long storage life. The almond kernel is loose in the husk.
All in all, Prunus dulcis ‘Ferragnès’ is a reliable choice for almond lovers, with its good characteristics, high yield and excellent pollination capacity for other early-ripening varieties.
