Direct planting, any time of the year
The Musella lasiocarpa, also known as Chinese lotus or dwarf banana, is a compact ornamental banana with a distinctly exotic character. This unique variety grows to about 150 cm high and is ideal for tropical-looking borders, patio pots or as an eye-catcher in a tub. This set of two plants offers instant volume and future flowering pleasure.
Appearance and growth habit
The plant develops grey-green leaves with distinctive red veins. Unlike larger species such as Musa basjoo or Musa sikkimensis, this banana remains compact, making it perfect for smaller gardens or limited space. After 3 to 4 years - depending on growing conditions - a yellow flower over 20 cm in diameter forms from the stem. This inflorescence is spectacular: new petals open every few weeks, allowing flowering to continue for up to 12 months.
Side shoots & life cycle
After flowering, the mother plant dies off, but the plant produces more than enough side shoots to ensure continuity. This creates a sturdy clump full of exotic charm over time.
Care & hibernation
From April to November, the plant can be placed outside, preferably in full sun and with a nutritious soil. During these months, regular watering and fertilisation (e.g. organic manure or compost) is crucial for healthy growth and eventual flowering.
For winter, there are two options:
Outdoors: Protect the roots with a thick mulch layer and insulate the trunk with reed mats or climate cloth.
As a tub plant: overwinter in a light, dry place above +5°C. This is the safest way to encourage flower formation and preserve the plant year after year.
Note that the plant is moderately hardy to -8°C and can be sensitive to our wet winter climate.
Additional information
The Musella lasiocarpa is native to the mountains of Yunnan (China), where it is found at altitudes of up to 2,500 metres. It is also called Ensete lasiocarpum and belongs to the same family as the edible banana. Although it does not produce edible fruit, its long-lasting inflorescence and fragrant flower make it one of the most decorative banana plants.
