Origin and characteristics
Coffea arabica accounts for approximately 75% of global coffee production and is prized for its mild flavour and lower caffeine content. The plant belongs to the Rubiaceae family and grows naturally in mountainous regions with a warm, humid climate. Indoors, it thrives best in plenty of indirect light and at a constant temperature above +7°C.

Growth and flowering
This evergreen plant has oval, dark green leaves with a slightly glossy upper surface. In spring, it blooms with small white flowers that give off a pleasantly sweet scent. If pollination is successful, green berries develop, which ripen to red in autumn. Each berry contains two coffee beans which – after fermentation and roasting – can be used to make your own coffee.

Care tips

• Light: plenty of indirect sunlight; avoid the bright midday sun

• Water: Keep the soil slightly moist; avoid letting it dry out or becoming waterlogged

• Summer location: can be placed outdoors, preferably in partial shade

• Winter location: a well-lit, draught-free room at +7°C or warmer

• Pruning: easy to shape, responds well to pruning of the trunk or branches

The plant grows slowly but steadily and, if left unpruned, reaches a maximum height of around 2.5 metres. Regular pruning keeps it compact and encourages good branching.
