Description
The chokeberry is a shrub from the rose family like the apple and pear. The berries are tart with apple aromas and packed with antioxidants. Much jam and juice is made from them, but the berries also lend themselves to use as compotes or in marinades with game dishes (the berries' acidity is thought to tenderise the meat). The shrub flowers in early May in umbels which are visited by bees and butterflies, produces beautiful clusters of black berries and to top it all off, a spectacular red leaf colour in autumn.
