The Diospyros khaki ‘Pollinator’ is a special pollinating persimmon which is ideal for improving the yield and fruit quality of other persimmon varieties. This variety produces male flowers that are essential for optimal fertilisation in varieties that otherwise quickly suffer from fruit drop. Although many persimmons also form fruit without pollination, cross-pollination with ‘Pollinator’ provides more fruit, larger size and less fruit drop during the growth period.

This persimmon tree blooms in late spring with creamy white, tubular flowers. The male flowers often appear in clusters and contribute to excellent pollination of well-known varieties such as ‘Tone Wase’, ‘Rojo Brillante’‘ or  ‘Jiro’ . The tree grows vigorously, forms an airy crown and is well hardy to about -15 °C. Although the ‘Pollinator’ itself does not bear commercially valuable fruit, it is indispensable for anyone who has several persimmon trees and wants to maximise yields.

Plant it preferably in a sunny and warm position in well-drained, nutritious soil, and combine it in the garden or orchard with other special fruit varieties such as our Chinese date (Ziziphus jujuba) or Nashi pear (Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Chojuro’).
