The Diospyros khaki ‘Mela’ is a special apple-like variety of Sharon fruit which can be eaten straight after harvesting, without any astringent aftertaste and without needing to soften first. The tree grows to a medium size and forms a broad, rounded crown with large, glossy leaves. In autumn, the leaves turn a spectacular shade of red-orange, making the tree a real eye-catcher even when it is not bearing fruit. In May–June, small, yellowish-white flowers appear. The fruits are round to slightly flattened, glossy orange and have a surprisingly firm, sweet flesh – just like an apple.

‘Mela’ is self-pollinating, but to ensure higher yields and regular fruit set, it is advisable to combine it with a pollinator such as the Diospyros kaki ‘Pollinator’. This tree thrives best in a sunny position with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It is very hardy and can withstand low temperatures down to around –15 °C.
