Actinidia arguta ‘Chang Bai Giant’ is a female kiwi berry distinguished by its exceptionally large fruits. These so-called mini-kiwifruit have a smooth skin and can be eaten immediately with skin and all. The fruits are remarkably large for a kiwi berry, very flavourful and are harvested in autumn.

This climber grows vigorously and is suitable for being led along pergolas, racks or wires. The combination of strong growth and large fruits makes this variety an interesting choice for lovers of unusual fruit in the garden.

- Pot size: 1 litre pot
- Height on delivery: 20-40 cm (indicative)

About the species

Actinidia arguta is a fast-growing climbing plant that winds around a support with supple shoots. The plant can eventually reach a height of 6 to 8 metres and forms long shoots of 2 to 3 metres each year.

The leaves are oval and dark green in colour. In autumn, they turn yellow, giving extra ornamental value. Flowers appear in May. This variety forms only female flowers and therefore has a male pollinator needed, such as a male kiwi berry, for example Actinidia arguta ‘Weiki’, to produce fruit.

The fruits are large, slightly flattened and can reach 4-5 cm in length. They weigh up to about 20 grams and ripen around October. First fruiting can usually be expected from 3 to 4 years after planting.

Care

The kiwi berry grows best in a warm, sunny and sheltered location. Protection from wind is important for good growth and fruiting. The plant prefers a nutrient-rich, humus-rich and well-drained soil that remains sufficiently moist. Regular watering is important, especially in dry periods. Due to its strong growth, it is important to guide the plant along a sturdy structure, such as a pergola, rack or stretched wires.

Prune

Pruning is important to control growth and fruit production. In winter, the plant can be pruned back to maintain structure. In summer, light pruning can be done if necessary to guide growth and keep light in the plant.

Winter care

Actinidia arguta is well hardy, but young shoots and flowers can be susceptible to late night frosts in spring. A sheltered location helps to limit damage.

Use of the fruits

‘Chang Bai Giant’ kiwi berries are great for eating fresh. Their smooth skin means they do not need to be peeled. In addition, they can be processed in desserts, fruit salads or jams.

For lovers of climbing plants and fruit-bearing species, this kiwi berry can be combined well with other small fruits or complementary pollinators. Combining several species creates better fruit set and a longer harvest period in the garden.
