Planting and start
Nut trees are preferably planted in autumn or early spring, when the tree is dormant. Make sure you have a spacious planting hole and well-drained, nutritious soil so that the roots can develop deeply and vigorously. After planting, sufficient watering is important, especially in the first growing season.
Stand and soil
Most nut trees like space and light.
- A sunny to slightly sheltered position promotes growth and fruit set
- Deep, well-drained soil prevents wet feet
- Walnuts and pecan grow best in nutritious soils
- Hazelnuts and almonds are slightly more tolerant and also suit lighter soils
Care and growth
- Water during prolonged drought, especially on young trees
- Mulch around the trunk helps keep the soil moist and airy
- Fertilise lightly in spring to support growth
Pruning and maintenance
Nut trees require little pruning.
- Prune only if necessary and preferably in summer to avoid bleeding
- Remove crossing or damaged branches
- Give the tree enough space to develop its natural shape
